Dark Angel Saga Book 2 contains the concluding issues of a story arc that began with Uncanny X-Force: The Dark Angel Saga, Book 1. X-Force is the secret assassin squad that uses any means necessary to save the world. The conclusion of this must-buy story arc ends with massive changes for the X-Men universe, including a new team member for X-Force (I can't say who, but I am personally excited to see more of this character) and a new student for Wolverine's school (a student who Beast is very unhappy to see).
There is quite a bit of marvel mythology wrapped in these issues which may be daunting for some readers. But writer Rick Remender is able to expertly channel decades worth of Apocalypse backstory, an alternate universe, a love story, and a whole host of good and bad characters into a white-knuckle action-packed story. I could not put it down.
Artists Jerome Opena and Robbi Rodriguez bring a lot of talent to this book. Opena's art in particular combines the perfect amount of shadow, realism, and detailed facial expression to convey the desperate fight for the fate of the world against one of X-Force's own. Rodriguez heads the art of issue #19, the denouemont of the story arc presented here. The mood is different as the characters must digest the ramifications of saving the world at a very high price.
X-Force does contain a "parental advisory" on the back cover. This advisory is mostly for violence. During the battle between X-Force and horsemen of Apocalypse there are some brutal moments (anything less would have felt weak and artificial). But this violence, I feel, fits the gravity of the narrative and is well within the natural boundaries for each character.
This graphic novel continues a series of great X-Force episodes. These are high-octane, action packed, gritty stories. I highly recommend this graphic novel after you read the book one companion volume.

Turns it up to 11

Common sense dictates that you shouldn't be reading book 2 if you haven't read book 1. If you haven't, then you need to just get both and read them in one sitting. You won't regret it.
If you have, you know that up to this point the Dark Angel Saga has been wall-to-wall action, violence, romance, and drama. Penned by the white hot Remender with amazing artwork by Opena (whose style fits these books perfectly), it was hard to imagine this series getting any better after finishing book one.
Well, it did. And the pedal never leaves the metal until the final chapter. The first chapter picks up right where the last book left off. X-force in a straight up showdown with Archangel and the Four Horsemen of Apocalypse. Now backed by the powerful Genocide (Holocaust re-named?), another throwback to the Age of Apocalypse. Warren Worthington is now gone, and in his place stands only Archangel, heir to Apocalypse. Like his predecessor, Archangel only has one goal: To serve evolution by exterminating all humans while allowing mutants to flourish.
The primary mission for X-force has changed. Where they had previously killed Apocalypse, they must now do the same to their former teammate (and lover to Psylocke). I won't spoil anything, but let's just say things don't go as planned for X-force, and the ensuing chapters are one long, bitter struggle that regularly left me with feelings of despair, wondering how the team could possibly overcome these odds. I actually think the end of each chapter left me with the chills. The use of panels throughout the story was expertly done. Every chapter brought something new to the story, and I found it impossible to put down.
I could also never give a 5-star review without the art being excellent. In my opinion, this book outdoes even book 1. I was in awe at some of the art done by Opena here, it was simply top notch. In every panel, Archangel simply looks like winged death. He looks like the badass incarnation of Apocalypse that should be feared, and he acts like it too. I have a new respect for Archangel as a bad guy, and the art here has a lot to do with that. Not just Archangel either, Opena does some serious work on Genocide and a certain old-school X-man who makes no small cameo in this book (I won't ruin it for you, but he wasn't in book 1).
My ONLY complaint about the art is the swap in artist for the final chapter. Mark Brooks fills in for Opena here, and the difference is shocking. All the darkness and detail in Opena's art is gone, and in its place is cartoonish and sloppy art. It's quite a shame because it detracts from the overall book, but not enough to subtract a star.
Overall, this is one of the most well-rounded books I have read in a long time. The art causes me to give each page a second look, and the writing is ultra sharp. Remender is expert at handling each character as an individual, giving them perfect characterizations. Hell, even Deathlok shows some depth of character here. The bottom line is, if you like your books dark, violent, well-written, and featuring some of the best characters from both the main Marvel universe and the Age of Apocalypse, then you need to stop reading reviews and just buy the book and thank me later.

Great end to an epic storyline.

If you've already been reading X-Force, there's really no reason not to pick this one up. The Dark Angel Saga is a journey that has been building up since the first issue and it's a hell of a ride that reaches its ultimately satisfying conclusion in this hardcover.
X-fans, young or old, should enjoy this!
In fact, it might have been TOO good because the Otherworld arc that follows this hasn't been anywhere near as enjoyable as this one.
However, if you're new to the series, I would recommend that you read the books prior to this one because jumping straight into this one could be overwhelming. But trust me, it'll be worth it.
Now we're all waiting for that Marvel Omnibus to come out...
