Man Without Fear Or Reservations: Buy This Book

I just received this book today and I'm already halfway through the volume. With more than a dozen pamphlet-size books contained within, this is a serious chunk of comic-book goodness.
Written by Mark Waid and illustrated by Chris Samnee, this is the concluding volume of Waid's resurrection of Daredevil. While respecting all that came before, Waid managed the almost-unheard of trick of moving Daredevil out of the shadows and into a less-angsty environment at the same time keeping characterization from previous runs of the book.
This is a Daredevil who can enjoy the benefits of his powerset, while also understanding the burden he places on himself. Well written, amazingly drawn, this volume not only wraps up several threads Waid began weaving into the story in the first issue, but also does a great job of setting up the next volume of our Horned Hero.
Definitely worth your time and money.

Mark Waid does it again!

Mark Waid does it again: the third and final volume of his "Daredevil" run (now relaunched and currently going with both Waid/Samnee still attached) keeps the momentum and suspense of the previous two volumes, and makes a beautiful close. The actions and events of the last two volumes come full circle, with a surprise twist that was nicely executed. New and old villains returned, giving good 'ole Horn-head a good fight/mystery, all while Matt dealt with a problem that even he had his hands tied on.
While there were one or two filler issues in the whole set, this run was amazing and never disappointed, all the way up to the end. The way the series was closed was brilliant, even though it meant certain things had to come to an end while new doors opened. Samnee's art was great, matching the writing perfectly and stayed balanced yet powerful throughout (I still prefer Rivera's from the first volume, however I'm biased) and helped the story maintain it's excellence.I really liked some of Samnee's covers too, including the one on the cover of the hardcover itself with the play on words, "There Goes the Man Without Fear..." I couldn't be happier, both for how good it was and how well Matt is evolving as a character, yet staying true to his roots. I am eager to read the new DD series, knowing that it will be just as good as the first 3 by Waid/Rivera/Samnee!!! For any fan of the Daredevil character, this and Volume 1 & 2 is a must read!

Here Comes A Daring Turning Point

This volume collects issues 22-36 and Indestructible Hulk issues 9-10.
Mark Waid just knows almost better then any other writer in mainstream comics how to settle in on a title and celebrate the character he is writing, the supporting cast and the predominant tone that has always surrounded the characters, and celebrate the universe they are immersed in by giving winks and nods to what has come before, incorporating important landmarks or events that have happened in a universes long history in natural ways, and have guest appearances that do not feel forced or out of place and are just fun. Let me sum up that last one perfectly: Daredevil manages to convince the Silver Surfer to let him steer his board through New York City. Nuff Said.
These deluxe hardcover collections are worth the wait, as opposed to getting the regular hardcovers or paperbacks, not only because Marvel puts more issues in them but the books are so well put together that there is no gutter loss and they stay open with ease and the extra dimensions are worth seeing the gorgeous artwork on display.
The first two deluxe hardcovers are a real treat as Waid did everything I mentioned previously, but also took a slight detour from the usually grim and brooding world of Daredevil. He incorporated some fun in it. He added some swashbuckling savvy into Matt Murdock/Daredevil that adds more dimension to the character and the series. The previous collections did a wonderful job of setting up Waid's take on the man without fear's world and having some wild adventures and even wrapped up one massive plot thread in the second volume. There is still one big conspiracy that lay unsolved that goes back to the first issue and it gets resolved here in stunning fashion. Waid even has the audacity to hit one of Matt/Daredevil's closest friends and allies with a terminal illness which is handled so well and is utterly heartbreaking.
Waid even finishes on high note as an enemy thought dealt with rears it's ugly head and pushes Daredevil to near madness as he makes some jaw dropping decisions that not only affects his life and status quo but the series as a whole.
Hey, a tremendous shout out to illustrator Chris Samnee and colorist Javier Rodriguez. Samnee uses a minimal amount of lines but uses them to great effect and portrays some amazing sequences of action to the emotionally heartbreaking scenes between two people. Samnee almost does every issue but is filled in by his amazing colorist Rodriguez who is quite a darn good illustrator himself.
This volume concludes with the two Hulk issues. Waid's Hulk series is not as great as his Daredevil run but he manages to interject some fascinating new bits into Bruce Banner's life. These two issues are collected here as Daredevil guest stars in a very significant way. They are just pure fun. And Matteo Scalera illustrates perfectly in his expressive sketchy style while moodily colored by Val Staples.
A great wrap up to Mark Waid's initial Daredevil run complimented with some fabulous art. I hope they keep releasing Waid's current All-New Marvel Now run is these deluxe hardcovers because there really is no better way to go.
