Batman Vol. 7: Endgame (Batman Graphic Novel), by Scott Snyder

Batman’s greatest foe has returned for one last gag-but this time, not even the Joker is laughing. In their last encounter, the Dark Knight failed to live up to the Joker’s grand plans, so now the Joker is deadly serious.

The games are over and, for their final showdown, the Clown Prince of Crime won’t be staging a comedy. No more macabre mind games. No more perverse pranks. The crazed killer who has elevated evil to an art is about to paint his masterpiece: the utter destruction of Batman and everything he holds dear. He’ll turn the Justice League against Batman. He’ll turn the people of Gotham into giggling psychopaths. But that’s just the setup-the punchline is even more terrifying.

The #1 New York Times best-selling team of Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo create the ultimate face-off between the greatest hero and villain in all of comics in BATMAN VOLUME 7: ENDGAME-and it’s no laughing matter. Collects stories from BATMAN #35-40.

Review
“[Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s] biggest story line in terms of cast and scope during the duo's classic four-year run on the series and one designed to celebrate the character's 75th anniversary.”—USA TODAY

“Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo have done wonders with BATMAN and just when you thought it couldn't get any bigger or better, here comes ENDGAME.”—TECH TIMES

“Endgame, as with all of Snyder’s run of Batman so far, is a story that simply should not be missed. Snyder’s themes are boldly stated yet again with an intent to add even more to the Batman mythos.”—IGN

“Why is Gotham City crumbling, you ask? Well, that’s mostly due to Batman writer Scott Snyder putting the city through the wringer time and time again in consistently excellent stories like COURT OF OWLS, DEATH OF THE FAMILY and now ENDGAME.”—NERDIST

A risky, yet masterful Batman/Joker story and highlight of the New 52
By Stuart S
The Batman and the Joker: perhaps the most famous super-hero rival of all time, rivaled only by Superman and Lex Luthor. This is their zenith, their endgame, an event Snyder built towards since Death of the Family. There is so much history between these two that an arc called 'Endgame' has a lot to live up to if it is to be the final battle for Batman and Joker.

Death of the Family was not as highly regarded by yours truly as the masterpiece many call it. I felt Snyder took it a little too far, but I still enjoyed his adaptation and eagerly anticipated the next time we would see Joker. After a few years of waiting, Capullo and Snyder began this arc and it did not disappoint. Snyder brings in the Justice League, the Bat-family, and a whole host of other characters to deliver this story. Despite the plethora of pieces, this arc never feels over-stuffed and focus remains on Batman. The story itself is complex and layered, but very linear for the most part. The notion of what and who the Joker really is played with by Snyder, a risky move that is sure to ruffle a few feathers. Batman is pushed to his limits, and Snyder is able to capture all the emotions masterfully. Volume six was very disappointing, but I think Snyder redeemed himself here. Even more appreciated is the fact that the entire arc is wrapped up nicely in one volume, a fact that cannot be said about the next two volumes.

Capullo's art is fantastic. His style is fairly unique, a paradox of cartoonish-elements and detailed realism. The colors and his pencils produce some of the best Batman artwork put to print in recent memory, and continues to set a precedent for all comic book imagery. The art makes this volume, capturing the madness of the Joker and grim determination of the Dark Knight.

There are, however, a couple factors that prevented me from awarding five stars. For a story about what is likely the final Batman/Joker story for some time, there isn't a whole lot of these two face-to-face. Granted, when they do meet, it is immensely powerful, it just felt a bit lacking. This is the Endgame story for these two, but it is worth pointing out that, in terms of the New 52 continuity, Batman and Joker have not had a whole lot of interaction, especially in the Snyder/Capullo title. What I'm trying to say is that Snyder is trying to have it both ways in terms of the Batman/Joker history. He expects the reader, understandably, to have a great appreciation for the significance of this showdown without having detailed a lot of history within the Batman New 52 title. This volume can stand by itself in terms of story, but is not quite as independent as say, Zero Year.

Overall, this volume accomplished what it set out to do: deliver a satisfying, epic conclusion to Batman and Joker. I highly recommend this collection, and have no doubt that this story will endure in Batman mythos for quite some time.

Great story line, but get Joker: Endgame instead of this one.
By Tony
Great storyline. Good to see Joker back and full of new tricks. For what its worth though do not get this volume you should get joker: Endgame. It includes everything from this volume and extra back stories.

The visuals are good, but the story line was definitely hyped up
By Dylan Thompson
The visuals are good, but the story line was definitely hyped up. I waited a long time for this and was let down. I even read it a few months later to see if I felt anything more, but the story is just kind of flat. The predecessor, death of the family is better in my opinion.
