The follow-up to the acclaimed title The Curiosities: A Collection of Stories by Maggie Stiefvater, Tessa Gratton, and Brenna Yovanoff.

In a faraway land convulsed by war, a young soldier hears the desert's curious hum as he disarms bombs with the person he doesn't know how to love.

In a place so shriveled by drought that any drowning is a curiosity, a young writer tries again and again to tread water beneath the surface of a vast and unusual sea.

Gr 9 Up—The three authors behind the dazzling collection The Curiosities: A Collection of Stories (Carolrhoda Lab, 2012) have assembled a new trio of vignettes; each author has penned one tale, including comments for future writers located in the margins, but with mixed results. Each short work sheds light on one aspect of writing: characterization, world-building, and the development of an idea. "Ladylike," Stiefvater's contribution and the weakest of the three, opens the volume. Aspiring writers will likely enjoy the literary advice more than the story. Stiefvater's quest is to thoroughly define protagonist Petra by one main trait. Unfortunately, this makes her one-dimensional and lowers readers' ability to empathize with her or to imagine adding their own little flourishes to the character. Gratton's "Desert Canticle," the instructive entry on world-building, presents a timely tale of the mage Aniv, a magically gifted transgender woman who is romantically paired with her male assistant, Rafel, in a bomb-defusing mission. The achingly desolate story examines identity, secrets, transformations, and hypocrisy in a postwar setting. Both the novella and the advice are equally memorable. Yovanoff's haunting tale, "Drowning Variations," thoroughly chronicles the growth of an idea. It is fascinating to see one drowning become the basis for many different stories and how the author refines and edits until completion. Yovanoff provides the largest amount of literary advice, placing it mostly within the chapter proper. VERDICT Purchase for aspiring authors seeking advice; otherwise, pass.—Cindy Wall, Southington Library & Museum, CT

a must-read for aspiring authors and fantasy fans alike

In an old walk up in Brooklyn, a young woman is hired as a reader and companion for a strange older woman. What starts a job quickly turns into something much more important as Petra learns about context, ladylike behavior, and speaking her mind all while finding an unusual kind of friendship in "Ladylike" by Maggie Stiefvater.

In a faraway land a young soldier works to disarm magical bombs left behind by rebels. The hum of the desert lulls him and the mysterious magician on his team enchants him, but sometimes loving something is hard until you know the truth about yourself in "Desert Canticle" by Tessa Gratton.

In a town where water is scarce, drowning is a rarity. There are a lot of ways to tell the you about the boy she found drowned in a half inch of water, but there's only one right story for Jane and the drowning place in "Drowning Variations" by Brenna Yovanoff.

The Anatomy of Curiosity (2015) is the second anthology from authors (and critique partners) Tessa Gratton, Maggie Stievfater and Brenna Yovanoff. In this followup to The Curiosities the focus is more squarely on the mechanics of writing and how ideas can become stories.

For this collection each author wrote a new novella and details their writing process in a preface and margin comments. Between each story all three authors also discuss how they tackled finding critique partners, revision, and _______.

Each author frames their margin comments and notes in the context of their focus when writing. Stiefvater discusses character (how she builds characters and conveys characterization through different aspects of the story), Gratton focuses on world-building (how worlds shape characters and how world-building choices shape the rest of the story), while Yovanoff talks about ideas (getting from the idea she has to the story she wants to tell with a particular project).

It's worth noting that The Anatomy of Curiosity can be read, first and foremost, as a set of engaging fantasy novellas. As fans of these authors would expect, each novella is well-written and evocative in its own right. In reading the marginalia and supplemental materials, however, readers are treated to not only excellent fiction but also an insider's view of the creative process from three incredibly talented writers.

The Anatomy of Curiosity is a must-read for aspiring authors and fantasy fans alike.

Better as a reference text
By Tez Miller
I've read and enjoyed some Maggie Stiefvater books, I own but haven't yet read some Brenna Yovanoff novels, and while I'm not interested in any of Tessa Gratton's works she seems like an awesome person on social media. THE ANATOMY OF CURIOSITY is a great opportunity to get into the authors' heads a bit to see how stories develop out of vague ideas.

Three different authors; three different approaches. Maggie starts with characters, Tessa begins with a world, and Brenna has a topic. They ask themselves questions, rule out possibilities in order to get to the heart of what they want to focus on, and sometimes they meander around in several different ways until finally figuring out what and how they want to say.

Maggie Stiefvater's "Ladylike" sparked from an idea about an older woman and a teen. The story doesn't particularly intrigue until the appearance of a guy in the woman's apartment, and waiting for that to happen includes plodding through some pretentiousness. To the poetry's credit, when checking on Wikipedia to determine if a poet mentioned in the story was real (he was), the word "algolagnia" added to my vocabulary, so that's a positive.

When the lady talks about context, and how pieces of the creator end up in their creations, it makes you wonder. A common discussion among readers is how to deal with problematic authors - and by that, do we stop reading their books entirely? Or continue to read them, whilst knowing that some of the authors' worse personality aspects may end up in their characters? Will disliking parts of the author affect enjoyment of their works?

Tessa Gratton's idea of magical bombs is intriguing, but the way she tells it doesn't really appeal to me. I have no interest in made-up lands; I prefer to read about real places. I'm definitely an urban fantasy fan, not one of traditional/epic/high.

But while the author's inspiration focuses on world-building, based on "Desert Canticle" her strong point is characterisation. The big reveal doesn't come until the story's midpoint, but from then on the tale really makes a stand. If Tessa Gratton ever writes a contemporary, it would be awesome.

I'm not sure how to follow Brenna Yovanoff's "Drowning Variations", so I've decided that it shows several drafts of wandering and explaining, the author talking to the reader about how she found the right story in which to incorporate a teen drowning. And so I believe "The Drowning Place" is the REAL story, and everything else is just leading up to and discussing it. "The Drowning Place" is four-star quality. As for the other "variations", they take the place of margin notes (which the other authors' contributions had, but this one doesn't).

THE ANATOMY OF CURIOSITY shows how authors' minds work in different ways, and may give readers new methods of idea development to try. It may not really connect as a fiction anthology, but as a reference text it's well worth rereading.

A great look at writing.
By Donna C
I wasn’t as blown away by THE ANATOMY OF CURIOSITY as I was by THE CURIOSITIES but that’s not to say it wasn’t good. Truly, it was. I just didn’t feel as absorbed by it as I did the last one. Maybe because this one was a digital copy and the first one wasn’t and it involved so much more complimentary STUFF to reading the stories and I was missing that here. I don’t know. I don’t have a hard copy of this one so I can’t rightly compare if I’m missing doodles and little notes and tiny asides that would just add to the overall Merry Sisters of Fate reading experience.

But I liked the stories and ANATOMY was more focused on teaching writing to others where CURIOSITIES was more internalized with the authors teaching writing to each other and the readers got to watch their process from the sidelines, munching on popcorn. As a writer I was more involved on a studious level with this one as I read the notes, saw how each other approached writing and just how deeply they all delved into it. I felt wholly inadequate but it also made me think that maybe that’s what I’m missing. That my stuff’s good but not GOOD because it’s missing that level of authorial depth that Stiefvater, Gratton, and Yovanoff put into it. Or maybe my style is just far more chaotic (I seemed to match up with Brenna a bit more here with approach) and I’ve just never been forced to face my own process. My process just happens but maybe if I actually sat down and thought about it I wouldn’t be too far off from these ladies. I don’t know, because writing is so varied.

I liked the “real world” examples of their writing being put up for dissection. ANATOMY isn’t about critiquing but about studying an already polished novella and breaking it down to its basic parts. Basically breaking the finished puzzle apart piece by piece and getting an explanation as to why this corner was laid out first, followed by this blotch of red in the middle, and then this edge section. So even though their finished products were broken apart by the end, it still gave me not only a complete picture of each story but three completely different processes on how each world was created.

It all made me content. ANATOMY is less about telling a story for a story’s sake. Don’t go into this one thinking that you’re going to get a Maggie story, a Brenna story, and a Tessa story. You are but I don’t think they’ll affect you in the same way they usually do. But as a writer it’ll rile up your world and put you at peace with it as it showcases three very different writing styles, the depths of writing, and the glorious finished products that come with it. As a reader it’ll give you a behind-the-scenes look as to how something that really is so short is put together and the incredible amount of brain power used to glue it all together. The amount of work required to make a great story so that you don’t actually see that work is awesome in the true meaning of that word. So while I second-guessed everything that I’ve written I also had my eyes opened even wider and I learned from this book. Had I gotten nothing out of it 1) that would have been a crime and 2) I wouldn’t have been listening (or reading, as it were). If you are receptive to letting these women into your space they will have much to teach you.

Read THE ANATOMY OF CURIOSITY to get a peek inside the brains of three great authors. And read it to make yourself grow as an author. I’m going to file this away with my love for FICTION EDITING (Browne/King) as a tool for helping me. Getting rules talked at you is helpful (to an extent). But seeing authors deconstruct their work just adds a whole other level of learning to writing that I feel greater knowing.
