Lysbeth: A Tale of the Dutch is a 1901 novel by H. Rider Haggard.This tale of the persecution of the Protestant Dutch by their Spanish oppressors was very well written and gave one a good grasp upon the historical figures and events of the time.
H. Rider Haggard — was an English writer of adventure novels set in exotic locations, predominantly Africa, and a pioneer of the Lost World literary genre. He was also involved in agricultural reform throughout the British Empire. His stories, situated at the lighter end of Victorian literature, continue to be popular and influential.
His novels portray many of the stereotypes associated with colonialism, yet they are unusual for the degree of sympathy with which the native populations are portrayed. Africans often play heroic roles in the novels, although the protagonists are typically European (though not invariably). Notable examples are the heroic Zulu warrior Umslopogaasi and Ignosi, the rightful king of Kukuanaland, in King Solomon’s Mines. Having developed an intense mutual friendship with the three Englishmen who help him regain his throne, he accepts their advice and abolishes witch-hunts and arbitrary capital punishment.

Well written, timeless, classic, engaging plot, complex characters. it is an amazing book and definitely deserves a 5-Star rating. Superbly written.

I love this book!

This book takes place in the Netherlands and is about a girl named Lysbeth van Hout. Actually, the last 2/3 of the book is about her son Foy. I will not give away what happens, but I will say that I loved this book. If you are a guy, it is not a girlie book at all. It is written by a man. But girls will still love it too. I know I did.

A wonderful novel!!!!!!!!

This is a very well writen story. You will find yourself crying with Lysbeth when she is threatened into marrying a spanish don she does'nt love instead of the love of her life. You will also find yourself rejoicing with foy when he finally marries elsa. Honestly the characters are so convincing you will feel like you knew them before you have finished the book.
