About the Author
Robin Burcell is an FBI-trained forensic artist who has worked in law enforcement for over two decades as a police officer, detective, and hostage negotiator. A two-time Anthony Award winner, she is the author of four Sydney Fitzpatrick novels The Black List, The Dark Hour, The Bone Chamber, and Face of a Killer as well as four novels featuring SFPD homicide detective Kate Gillespie: Every Move She Makes, Fatal Truth, Deadly Legacy, and Cold Case.

The Last Good Place
Robin Burcell The Last Good Place
I picked this book on a whim. When I read the credentials of the author and the types of books it followed, I knew that it would be something that I would enjoy. And, did I enjoy it!
The book has so much historical background that I could never review it with justice. It is superbly written and an outstanding police procedural.

You can't keep a good TV series down. I hope the author writes more stories featuring these 2!

Robin Burcell was asked by her publisher to update/continue the stories featuring 2 San Francisco detectives named Krug and Kellog. Originally Krug and Kellog were written by Carolyn Weston. Weston's duo became the basis for the TV show, The Streets of San Francisco. While Weston's Krug is more hard-boiled, Robin wrote Krug more like how Karl Malden played him.
In this story, our 2 detectives are hip deep in trying to find a serial killer, plus they have another murder that may or may not be related to the serial killer.
The story flows nicely. We get to know Kellog a lot in this story. Between trying to find the killer/s, we learn that Kellog is single; still trying to figure out females; as been in Homicide for a short time; and is trying to become a Lieutenant. I also liked that it was an old case that eventually solves the case.
While reading this story, I could hear Karl Malden and Michael Douglas saying their lines in this book! If you like police procedurals or are a fan of The Streets of San Francisco, you'll enjoy this book.

Interesting plot - with complexity - but the ending was too much like a bad thriller movie.
The book was a bit strange in that it changed the voice of the lead from one of the suspects to the lead detective.
The book would have benefited more detective-like details on solving the crime and a more measured pace at the end.
Also, the male lead detective's approach to romance came across as odd and artificial. Readers often complain that male authors don't write women very well - particularly in describing authentic emotions. Well, based on this book, it would appear that female authors have a similarly difficult time accurately conveying the emotional temperament of men.
