Tapestry, by Christopher Largent

In 1035 AD, a lame boy named Cuin escapes an assassin’s attack at the Duke of Normandy’s castle and spends the next decade developing into Normandy’s emissary to Flanders, Denmark, Norway, and England.

Though his true identity remains a mystery, Cuin trains with a local warrior-turned-hermit and travels through Flanders and Denmark as an ambassador. Relentlessly pursued by an assassin, he is aided by powerful friends who are close to the kings of England and Norway.

When a false accusation forces him to escape to Iceland and then to North America, Cuin receives further instruction from both an Icelandic prophetess and a Mi'kmaq wise man. Finally able to return home, he uses his talents to help resolve political crises for Duke William of Normandy. But even as Cuin discovers the truth about his origins, the new King of England runs afoul of the Pope, who has Duke William in his power. A fight for supremacy seems imminent, and Cuin’s talents may not be enough to stop it.

Steeped in rich historical detail and meticulously crafted in the tone of the eleventh century, Tapestry looks behind the scenes at the history of the Battle of Hastings—and its elegant cover-up.

Review
Tapestry is a novel set in 11th century England in the time of William the Conquerer. Richly researched, its subplot pertains to the making of the Bayeux Tapestry, an embroidered cloth depicting the events leading up to the Norman conquest of England ...

Author Christopher Largent brought this period to vivid life through wonderful characterization and intense research.  The tale he weaves had plenty of subplots with some unexpected twists, a sprinkling of humor here and there, and rich scenes ... For those passionate about this period in English history, this is not a book to pass up! Highly recommended.

From the Author
Welcome to the 11th-Century world of travel, healing, diplomacy,  adventure, romance, mystery, humor, and spiritual traditions, including European herbal healing, Norse mysteries, and Native teachings: Welcome to Tapestry, a tale which I hope you enjoy reading as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Tapestry is set BEFORE the Crusades, the Inquisition, and the Black Death, so it is NOT a "Dark Ages" misery tale. In fact, I wanted the novel and its characters to be "charming," as both readers and professional editors have called them.
Tapestry has a first-person, 11th-Century voice, so readers hear dialogue WITHOUT 20th-Century mental habits and biases.  That is, characters do not reflect on their emotional states (Freud was not born in the 11th Century), nor do they express angst about their destinies or drown in existential despair (the Existentialist philosophers did not live in the 11th Century either).

For 11th-Century writers, this was a new age, coming just after the millennium, a fresh time in history.  For us in the 21st Century, it is also a thousand years ago.  The first-person narration had to incorporate both of those perspectives.

The characters -- strong male and female characters abound here -- are real human beings with real motivations (no one-dimensional bad guys) and a sense of humor (something missing in much historical fiction).

Tapestry is historically accurate (with details that took extensive research), but after researching the period, I could not find historical or character support for the mainstream academic history of the Norman Conquest.  So the book challenges most historians' accounts of the Battle of Hastings (though some historians agree with my conclusions), treating it as an elegant cover-up, accomplished most effectively by the beautiful Bayeux Tapestry (in Bayeux, France).

When I first submitted the manuscript to well known professional editors, they praised the characters, plot, and writing.  But I know that writers and editors can be myopic about what readers will love.  So, when the first several hundred readers outright loved the book, I was relieved and delighted.  The best review I received, though, was that among the first fifty readers, five enjoyed the book so much that they read it a second time.  And loved it even more.

A masterpiece of writing
By Rob mayer
This is one of the best books I have read in years. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a great page turner. The story is not only extremely engaging it also opens up a world that I did not know much about. This period in history, the 11th century and the events surrounding William the Conquer are not really covered in history in the west. This is my favorite kind of book, A great story set in a time period that I new little about and by the end of the book I had such a deeper understanding of the events of that period. The characters in this book come alive on each page. The only problem was at the end I wanted more!!!

This is really a true masterpiece in writing and I encourage anyone who loves historical novels to read this book.

This is such an amazing story. Absolutely
By Mary AnneRegan
This is such an amazing story. Absolutely, it was a page turner from page one. I had such a good time. I didn't want it to end. This story is now a part of me. The characters are exciting. They are captivating. I felt as though I knew a few of them, at least I wanted to know them. And, the story allowed me to know them and care deeply for them. I had such an investment in the outcome, although I couldn't have predicted all that transpired. The copy is intriguing and so well thought out. The dialogue pulled me into the story further and further. I can't imagine the depth of the research, i.e., the description of the landscapes, the clothing, the villages. Most importantly, the historical research impressed me immensely. I was so deeply engrossed in the story that I would forget where I was. I wasn't here. I was there from 1035 to 1077. It is a rare privilege to read such a book. My gratitude to the author!

A RARE MASTERPIECE
By diane Mayer
Not only is this one of THE best books I've ever read, my husband is still in disbelief that i not only read it - but finished it before he did....
Novels aren't my thing, at all. Couldn't put this one down, literally - i found myself carrying it with me so any slight chance i had to read even a paragraph i took it!
Rarely, have i read anything that captured me the way Tapestry did and i am about to read it again......YES - you just want more.
Such a superb job of capturing every essence, detail and emotion that you are totally transported and become part of the story...
This book should be required reading in schools, allowing students to immerse themselves in a multi-dimensional story that becomes a part of you instead of one dimensional dates, facts, and boring characters.
Be prepared to fall in love, over and over again. A sequel or movie please!
