With good grace and wit

With good grace and wit, Norman Sherman's memoir describes his sojourn in US politics in the latter 20th century. His experience reinforces my own in meeting many good and dedicated politicians, trying their best to serve the common good. There are many hard calls and mistakes to be made- and there are many self seekers in government (fewer where there is broad voter participation). This book is a fun read and a good antidote to right wing propaganda vilifying politics.

Excellent

The title’s “From Nowhere” refers to Norman Sherman’s early years—growing up in Minneapolis during the Depression. The other part of the title, “to Somewhere,” refers to Sherman’s career, especially his service as a key aide to Hubert Humphrey, when Humphrey was a U.S. Senator, Vice President (under President Johnson), and the 1968 Democratic candidate for President.
In his review of this book (Huffington Post, Nov. 10, 2015), Al Eisele stated: “Norman Sherman has written a memoir that may discourage others . . . from writing theirs.” (Eisele is editor-at-large of The Hill.) Eisele's review comments on Sherman’s description of his own life, as well as his stories about “more than 50 famous figures,” mainly political figures.
I recommend this book to “senior citizens” who experienced the 1960s (and earlier years) and also to younger people who may not be familiar with that part of U.S. history. One example of how different the current political climate is from the 1960s is Sherman’s recounting of Senator Humphrey’s role as floor manager of the bill that became the 1964 Civil Rights Act—how effectively Humphrey dealt (1) with the Senate Republican leader, Everett Dirksen, who provided crucial support for the bill and (2) with Southern Democrats who strongly opposed the bill.
An indication of the merits of Sherman’s book is David Rupkalvis’ column inTucson Local Media (Dec. 23, 2015). Rupkalvis wrote that, as a “fairly conservative Republican,” he was surprised that he “absolutely loved” From Nowhere to Somewhere.
