gurdjieff not a charlatan

Gurdjieff was not a con man or a charlatan. He predicted the clash between the West and East. He regarded the energy of American culture as a possible agent of preventing the destructive potentiality of this clash. But he also observed America's obsession with "dollars, sex and food" as an obstacle.
His system clearly has within it, among other predictive notions, the periodic table, the existence of other planetary bodies within the solar system, and has a breadth of knowledge of science, religion, art, philosophy, history, psychology not found in any western streams of thought or understanding.
In fact his intention was to synthesize eastern awareness with western practical notions in order to prevent the destruction the inevitable clash might bring about.
He used music and dance in a practical way for his students. This film has some very rare videos of the kind of dance he taught. It is hypnotic and unlike anything youve ever seen.
In the 1920s his students, under his direction, performed similar dances(and other demonstrations)at Carnegie Hall in New York. A reading of the newspapers of the day indicate these were a sensation at the time.
The movie used Jean Salzmann as an advisor, the former dancer who was one of his chief followers and whom he intended to be the principal teacher of his system in France after he died.
However, he deliberately fostered the notion that he was a charlatan and fraud, as the first obstacle to be removed, he knew, was one's own egoism and failure to understand that we are ignorant, have no unified identity and lack real will.
Those unable to see through his ruse were those not able to receive his teaching anyway, and were of no use to his greater purpose.
Hence his intention was never to make it easy to understand his ideas or methods.
This obstacle still remains, as he intended it to, and there are many false teachers using his name for their own purposes - which he also knew was inevitable.
This movie is based on the book he wrote, which deceptively appears to be a straightforward account of some episodes in his life.
The movie sets out only to cinematically present some of them and to ask the essential and universal questions he addressed in his teachings. In the book much is buried - much more so than in the movie - and should be construed as a series of parables.

Eye Candy

When I was going through a classic, or, perhaps, mundane, midlife crisis, searching everywhere for answers, someone recommended "Meetings With Remarkable Men" to me. It was an entertaining read. That's it. Not a spiritual journey. Then I learned that a film had been made. When I saw the film, I was blown away. It was, cinematigraphically speaking, the finest film I had ever seen. Just Beautiful. Anyone who thought about it knew the work was apocryphal, even silly. Just entertainment. I think the author had a following. People who thought he spoke a truth with which they connected. He struck me as being a kind of a harmless scoundrel. So I ordered a video of the film from Amazon.com. When I played it on my VCR player, you couldn't make it out at all. Like the early days of TV when sometimes all you could see was ghost images. I should have returned it, but never got around to it. Maybe someday I'll order another copy and find out whether all copies are bad or I just got a lemon.

A wonderous film about the early life of G.I. Gurdjieff.

This film tells the story of the early life of G.I. Gurdjieff, during which he fervently searches for a source of knowledge that will help him begin to understand the meaning of human existence. The film's chief virtues come from the fact that the storyline and production were overseen by responsible elders central to the organization that Gurdjieff himself established to carry on the study and practice of his teachings after his death. Moreover, the sacred dances seen near the end of the film are actual examples of "movement exercises" performed by pupils of Gurdjieff as an aid to self-study, and they are seen performed not by actors or professional dancers, but by highly practiced pupils themselves.

Sigmund Freud was an Austrian neurologist, now known as the father of psychoanalysis. Freud qualified as a doctor of medicine at the University of Vienna in 1881, and then carried out research into cerebral palsy, aphasia and microscopic neuroanatomy at the Vienna General Hospital. Upon completing his habilitation in 1885, he was appointed a docent in neuropathology in the same year and became an affiliated professor (professor extraordinarius) in 1902.

In creating psychoanalysis, a clinical method for treating psychopathology through dialogue between a patient and a psychoanalyst, Freud developed therapeutic techniques such as the use of free association and discovered transference, establishing its central role in the analytic process. Freud’s redefinition of sexuality to include its infantile forms led him to formulate the Oedipus complex as the central tenet of psychoanalytical theory. His analysis of dreams as wish-fulfillments provided him with models for the clinical analysis of symptom formation and the mechanisms of repression as well as for elaboration of his theory of the unconscious as an agency disruptive of conscious states of mind. Freud postulated the existence of libido, an energy with which mental processes and structures are invested and which generates erotic attachments, and a death drive, the source of repetition, hate, aggression and neurotic guilt. In his later work Freud developed a wide-ranging interpretation and critique of religion and culture.

Psychoanalysis remains influential within psychotherapy, within some areas of psychiatry, and across the humanities. As such, it continues to generate extensive and highly contested debate with regard to its therapeutic efficacy, its scientific status, and whether it advances or is detrimental to the feminist cause. Nonetheless, Freud’s work has suffused contemporary Western thought and popular culture. In the words of W. H. Auden’s poetic tribute, by the time of Freud’s death in 1939, he had become “a whole climate of opinion / under whom we conduct our different lives”.

ONE OF FREUD'S KEY BOOKS, IMPORTANT FOR HIS LATER WORK

This book was published in German in 1905, and contains statements of his famous (or infamous, depending on one's view) theories such as "penis envy," "castration complex," and the "Oedipus complex."

Here are some representative quotations from the book:

"The fact of sexual need in man and animal is expressed in biology by the assumption of a 'sexual instinct.' ... The sexual expression corresponding to hunger not being found colloquially, science uses the expression, 'libido.'"
"The sexual instinct is probably entirely independent of its object and is not originated by the stimuli proceeding from the object."
"Now we are forced to the conclusion that there is indeed something congenital at the basis of perversions, but it is someting which is congenital in all persons; which as a predisposition may fluctuate in intensity, and that it is brought into prominence by influences of life."
"The historians of civilization seem to be unanimous in the opinion that such deflection of sexual powers from sexual aims to new aims, a process which merits the name of sublimation, has furnished powerful components for all cultural accomplishments."

The Great Pioneer of the Unconscious

It is not uncommon for scientists to dismiss Freud’s psychoanalysis as a pseudoscience. This is justified in many respects. His insistence that the joy of an infant suckling its mother’s breasts is sexual satisfaction, rather than merely nutritional satisfaction, reeks of dogmatic sexual obsession. His attempt to explain various personality quirks -- such as “anal retentiveness” -- as a consequence of improper potty training is not merely far-fetched, the same potty experience could supposedly determine directly opposite behavior, and Freud’s conclusions were certainly never verified by longitudinal studies, nor did he have direct access to the potty training his patients experienced.

Freud also takes it for granted that revulsion and shame regarding sex are congenital to civilized races, rather than merely being taught. “Savages” have remained primitive because, supposedly, they have no sense of sexual shame or modesty. Sexual perversions develop in people because, due to either sexual precocity or early seduction, they experienced sex before these inhibitions kicked in. He states that “the existence of congenital inversion (homosexuality) can certainly be questioned. . . the more examination . . . will probably show that the direction of the libido was determined by a definite experience of early childhood (p. 14).” Freud points out that this was also the opinion of Havelock Ellis. “The sexual impulse is probably entirely independent of its object and is not originated by the stimuli proceeding from the object (the opposite sex, that is) (p. 17).” So whether a man is sexually attracted to women, other men, children, sheep, or shoes is entirely dependent upon the happenstancial experiences of childhood. FYI, NO BONUS ISSUES

Just an FYI, this collection does NOT include the rare one-shot "punisher kills the marvel universe", as some reviewers have stated. Maybe an earlier edition did, but the one I just received does not. Unfortunately that bonus comic was the main reason I bought this, but I can't fault the collection. It's still a great punisher maxi-series.

The title says it all

Garth Ennis is rightly credited with bringing the Punisher series back to life with his interpretation of the character and writing his best work and some of the Punisher's best books. "Welcome Back, Frank" is Ennis' first book that takes Frank Castle from bizarre and frankly boring stories about angels and Heaven, and putting Frank back on the streets with a gun in his hand pointed at gangsters, where he belongs.

Ennis writes in his "mission statement" that he wanted to simplify the Punisher's adventures - great, interesting, exciting action with none of the droning introspection about "how many is enough, Frank?" and meandering thoughts on Frank's dead family. Here, and in Ennis' entire 10 book run on Punisher Max (each volume of which is highly recommended by the by), we see the Punisher do what he does best - taking bad guys down!

The Gnucci gangster family, the taskforce created to take down the Punisher, 3 copycat vigilantes, and a mad Russian make up this excellent comic book and continually set Frank up with a number of entertaining challenges to take out in increasingly entertaining ways (death by fat guy is the funniest). Ennis' trademark humour is also present in the character of Detective Soap, heading the taskforce of 2 to take down the Punisher, and a joke in his Precinct, and one of the copycat vigilantes named "The Holy" whose crimes are covered up by a senile old woman.

Having re-read this book after reading Ennis' numerous other books on the Punisher (he's written over 90 issues of this character), I'll say this is one of his most entertaining books he's ever written, counting everything he's done. Engaging, entertaining, fantastic action, compelling story, Ennis deserves all the credit for reinstating a fantastic character to his glory. His longtime collaborative partner Steve Dillon also contributes his usual high quality artwork to the book.

This is a great starting place for new readers to the Punisher and a must-read for existing fans. A brilliant comic book and a great read. If you loved this, you'll enjoy the sequel, "The Resurrection of Ma Gnucci".

He missed dealing out those ruthless spankings.

After breaking up a drug deal in deadly fashion, he turns his sights on the Gnucci mafia family. He dispatches their top guys, which angers the leader Ma Gnucci because those were her sons and brother he took out. She wages a full scale war against Punisher in which he's happy to take her up on. -summary

Interesting thing here, Garth Ennis's The Punisher: Welcome Back, Frank, was such a smash to the point where not only some fans hailed it as the definitive Punisher story at the time, but portions of it were also used for the 2004 live action film. This story actually breathed new life into the character, because during the mid to late 90's, it must be noted that the Punisher was being nailed by bad characterization and was in need of an overhaul. Ennis saved him back in 2000 with this 12 issue story, that skips the whole origin deal and gets straight down to business so fast, it will be awhile before you catch your breath, and your goal will be to run through all 260 plus pages in one sitting.

Punisher means business here as the story begins with him giving some guy a second chance, so that only the guy can renege on his end, and Punisher would return to snap his neck completely all around. From there he begins to take out more guys, which sees the Gnucci Family hiring hit men and Frank taking them out too in smooth fashion. Castle is the definition of badass here, and although I wasn't new to his antics before this; I still found myself wondering what he was going to do next.

The main plot revolves around Punisher's feud with the Gnucci Family. However, other subplots are injected with copycats influenced by the Punisher, and they deal out what they believe to be justice in their own ways. As well as two detectives whom are considered losers by the force attempting to bring Punisher in. The NYPD chooses the worst cops because they don't want to bring Punisher in to custody. The characters are developed and the story is well paced. There's even a segment between Punisher and Daredevil, and anyone familiar with these two will know that most of their interactions end with a brawl since they represent different sides of the law. It's rare they see eye to eye on anything.

It is easy to tell Ennis had a great time writing this story, unfortunately he did let his fun get a bit carried away though. The only down side will be that the story doesn't completely maintain its dark side, and it ventures into that realm of a casual comic book. This occurs when an uninteresting character by the name of The Russian is introduced. If you saw the 2004 movie and you cringed at that ridiculous action scene, well it's actually here too except it's much easier to get through. Thankfully, everything before it and even after it is so entertaining that it doesn't damage the story much.

Steve Dillon's artwork delivers the action well. It's really nothing you will see in the Punisher MAX line, but you get a fair share of head shots, and claymore mines tossed into cars creating nice explosions, along with the occasional neck snapping. The violence is well intact. Weapons are drawn with a good amount of detail, to the point M-16's and Uzi's can be easy enough to identify.

Garth Ennis was indeed aware of the Punisher's potential and he comes correct with this series. The action, characterization, fun dialog, and plot all come together for the most part. If you're brand new to Punisher stories and you need a place to start, I advise you to do this; come into Punisher: Year One first, read this book after it, then go to the Max line starting with Punisher MAX: Born. Between these three books you will get to see more than enough of Punisher's world to know if his stories are for you.
