Sir Henry Rider Haggard was an English writer of adventure novels set in exotic locations, predominantly Africa, and the creator of the Lost World literary genre. His stories, situated at the lighter end of the scale of Victorian literature, continue to be popular and influential. He was also involved in agricultural reform and improvement in the British Empire.

His breakout novel was King Solomon’s Mines (1885), which was to be the first in a series telling of the multitudinous adventures of its protagonist, Allan Quatermain.

Haggard was made a Knight Bachelor in 1912 and a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1919. He stood unsuccessfully for Parliament as a Conservative candidate for the Eastern division of Norfolk in 1895. The locality of Rider, British Columbia, was named in his memory.

It's about the Salvation Army

To start with, this is about the Salvation Army. It's not a typical HRH adventure story. HR Haggard did a study on the Salvation Army, and in this 2,237 location work he relays his experiences and shares views about immigration. The Regeneration title explains his view that the law should be "regenerating" people, and not go for vengeance.

It's not bad, just not what I was looking for.

Action, heroism, morality, courage... I loved it when I was a teenager and love it now. H. Rider Haggerd is so underrated by today's standards it is appalling!

George Bernard Shaw was born on July 26th, 1856 in Synge Street, Dublin. Shaw was also a fervent Fabian and a co-founder of the London School of Economics. Saint Joan in 1923 gained Shaw yet another international success. This led in 1925 to his being awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature for his contributions to literature. The citation praised his work as "... marked by both idealism and humanity, its stimulating satire often being infused with a singular poetic beauty". In 1938 he added an Academy Award for his work on Pygmalion. Shaw remains the only person ever to win a Nobel Prize and an Oscar. He refused all other awards, even a knighthood. George Bernard Shaw died on November 2nd, 1950 at the age of 94, of renal failure precipitated by injuries incurred by a fall whilst pruning a tree.

WHAT IS IS

This book was suggested byNatalie Goldberg for her upcoming class titled: "ROLLING WITH UNCERTAINTY: Koans and Writing." Steve Heine will also be instructing. I'm a tangential Zen novice. Natalie stated that writing practice is a back door to Zen. I am interesting in learning about other perceptions of reality.

I am unqualified to evaluate the accuracy of the research of Zen ancient texts that the book alludes to. The book is written in an academic style. This means there are lots of suppositions, cliches, and contradictions if one care looks for them, which I did (do).

While not the major intent of the book, there are similarities and contrasts with other world religions ingrained. These are not explicitly stated but are inescapable if one is aware of the larger topic This is to be expected; for after all Zen Buddism is a religion. Koans are part of the Zen holy text.

This book fits in a very small publishing niche whose audience is Zen seekers. It'll never make the New YorkTimes Best Sellers List. It's a good reference for Koans, if not the best there is. After all, Natalie recommended it!

Cetywayo and His White Neighbors, or Remarks on Recent Events in Zululand, Natal and the Transvaal is an 1882 non-fiction book by H. Rider Haggard, his first full-length published work. It was based on his time working in South Africa. The “Cetywayo” of the title is the Zulu king Cetshwayo kaMpande.

The book had some good reviews and Haggard received letters of praise from such figures as Lord Carnarvon and Randolph Churchill.

H. Rider Haggard — was an English writer of adventure novels set in exotic locations, predominantly Africa, and a pioneer of the Lost World literary genre. He was also involved in agricultural reform throughout the British Empire. His stories, situated at the lighter end of Victorian literature, continue to be popular and influential.

His novels portray many of the stereotypes associated with colonialism, yet they are unusual for the degree of sympathy with which the native populations are portrayed. Africans often play heroic roles in the novels, although the protagonists are typically European (though not invariably). Notable examples are the heroic Zulu warrior Umslopogaasi and Ignosi, the rightful king of Kukuanaland, in King Solomon’s Mines. Having developed an intense mutual friendship with the three Englishmen who help him regain his throne, he accepts their advice and abolishes witch-hunts and arbitrary capital punishment.

About the Author
Mache Seibel, MD, is one of America's leading experts on women's health and menopause. He served on the Harvard Medical school faculty for twenty years and is the editor of My Menopause magazine, which won a 2013 Web Health Award. Dr. Seibel appears regularly on Today, Inside Edition, and PBS.

An Important Book for all Perimenopause and Menopausal Women

I truly wish I had been able to read this book 10 years ago, it would have changed my life - my bone density, my well being and my post menopausal health. Dr. Seibel has written a momentous book for women - the best and apparently only resource for understanding hormones and the role hormones play in women's heart, breast, bone and mental well being. Hormone replacement decisions have been and continue to be made by women and their doctors with decades old inaccurate medical information. This is a tragedy for menopausal women of today who are vibrant, healthy, active and focused on making the most of their lives after menopause. Dr. Seibel provides clear explanations and analyses of the anxieties and fears connected to hormone replacement use. His extensive experience and insight provides the basis for the very critical decisions every woman needs to make regarding her health and future after menopause. I urge you to read Dr. Siebel's book. Whatever you decide, you will have invested in knowing the latest and best information in a timely way. I wish I had known during my estrogen window.

I really didn't like this book and don't even want to finish reading ...

I really didn't like this book and don't even want to finish reading it. The doctor made it seem like you only have 5 years from the onset of menopause to get on estrogen and then you better get off it when you turn 60. What's the point? I asked my doctor about this and she said you can stay on the hormones forever.
