Boon of a Book for the Naturally Curious

Wonderful book.
It really makes you stop and realize that, even while you're in a bustling urban environment, you still ARE in nature. Considering that 'being in nature' is a source of calm for a lot of people, awakening yourself to that fact makes life in a city just ~that more peaceful.

There are so many questions out there about nature that demand answers, and you will be made more aware of them. For the naturally curious, this book just makes cities curiouser and curiouser.

Decent, breezy general science writing

Good, for a fun, light summary of some really cool biology. Written at an accessible level for general reading, and probably appropriate for junior high-school and up. It didn't teach me anything I didn't know (but I'm a biology PhD); and I really wanted a lot more technical detail. I can't fault Johnson if I wasn't the target audience, and I think many people with little biology background would like it.

This is a beautiful story of inquiry. Weaving the growth of his infant daughters' interest in the outdoors Mr. Johnson opens a new universe for exploration - one that is walking distance from our houses. A combination of humor, scrutiny, blends with his powerful abilities to perceive the deeper parts of our relationship with urban nature.

Kipling’s works of fiction include The Jungle Book (1894), Kim (1901), and many short stories, including “The Man Who Would Be King” (1888). His poems include “Mandalay” (1890), “Gunga Din” (1890), “The Gods of the Copybook Headings” (1919), “The White Man’s Burden” (1899), and “If—” (1910). He is regarded as a major innovator in the art of the short story; his children’s books are classics of children’s literature; and one critic described his work as exhibiting “a versatile and luminous narrative gift”.
 
Kipling was one of the most popular writers in England, in both prose and verse, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Henry James said: “Kipling strikes me personally as the most complete man of genius (as distinct from fine intelligence) that I have ever known.” In 1907, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, making him the first English-language writer to receive the prize, and its youngest recipient to date Among other honours, he was sounded out for the British Poet Laureateship and on several occasions for a knighthood, all of which he declined.

Husband Captures His Wife's Affection

First published in 1945, "Storm Tide" is the second book in the Joanna Bennett series. This is the second Elisabeth Ogilvie book I've read. "Rowan Head" captured my imagination and put a smile on my face. This book creates the delightful setting of Bennett's Island off the coast of Maine near a coastal village of Brigport. As the story begins, Joanna returns to the island with her new husband Nils Sorenson. We are introduced to Joanna's brothers Mark and his wife Helmi, the good-natured Stevie & the moody Owen. The exposition recounts Joanna's stormy marriage to Alec and his death. Less passion and more Joanna's reliance on Nils to take her back to Bennett's Island mark her new marriage. Nils keeps looking for a loving wife, but increasingly becomes alienated by her lack of affection. The crisis in the relationship caps as Joanna reveals that her love making in the marriage bed is a loveless act of duty as part of the wife's job. At this, Nils removes himself from the island and heads to his relatives' mainland home to work on a boat they are repairing. The separation tests the limits of Joanna's pride. Her eight-year-old daughter Ellen misses her stepfather. A subplot focuses action on an abandoned boat Nils finds drifting. He tows the boat to shore. The missing fisherman, Winslow Fowler, has a brother Randy who comes and hits on Joanna. When she rejects him, rumors mysteriously spread throughout Brigport that Nils not only found the boat but murdered Winslow. This is compounded by an effort by the Fowler family to drive the Bennett family off their island. The book climaxes as the Bennett clan and the residents of the island come to town and confront the rumors. From a feminist analysis, we might find the love story dated as Joanna eventually capitulates, seeks Nils, and falls in love with him and assumes her "rightful" place as the husband's helper rather than as an independent assertive woman. On the other hand, it is a sweet love story where the husband eventually causes his wife to fall in love with him. "Storm Tide" is a gripping story from the World War II era; one that deserves a modern audience. Enjoy!

She is such a terrific author--writes so well about Maine, nature, children, pets and especially people! She really knows what she's talking about. You can get really caught up in her world--and this series continues up to the present although the Tide Trilogy takes place in the forties. Try also the Jennie trilogy--romantic, dramatic, wonderful. Both Joanna Bennett and Jennie are people you'd like to know--and you'll feel you do know them after reding their stories Jennie About to Be (Jennie Trilogy, Book 1)!

Lots to Practice -

I liked many of the thoughts and insights this book brought my way and the meditations and other practices such as the Kung Fu stances are nice. I like the sleep meditation. I appreciate the web links to the chapters of the book which have videos demonstrating most, if not all, of the practices, both the meditations and stances etc.
What didn't work for me was the foul language. I didn't expect that from a presumably enlightened person, namely a monk, but that's just me. Seems silly and immature. I would have given more stars except for the language. I also wanted to share parts of this with others but am reluctant due to language.

This book is called the Urban Monk. The author is going to be a little edgier and use that "S" word. This is not a book written for young adults or children, so the use of profanity and edgy talk is fine in this context. If this is something that will bother you, please consider this before purchasing. This book has a load of practical good advice for those looking to live a more focused, less stressful, purposeful, peaceful life while still living in a modern urban world of city traffic and carpools, deadlines, over-filled calendars, and the feeling of being pulled in every direction just making you feel like you're losing control of your life. This is not your typical touchy-feely book found in this genre. Dr. Shojai provides practical tips such as meditation, figuring out what your priorities are, Qi Gong exercises, etc, to help you reset your life and get back in control. When I read this book, I felt like Dr. Shojai knew exactly what kind of time and scheduling restraints I'm dealing with, which made me want to try his advice. So far, I have to say it's worked wonders!

Honestly I wish I could have read more to really evaluate the book but couldn't get past reliance on the "S" word as others have commented. Which seems odd for me to write because in informal occasions I have been known to use pretty colorful language myself and am usually not easily offended. I can understand using a "shock" word once or maybe twice to break a pattern. At first-I was amused and thought it seemed like he was keeping it "real". Then it was simply overused and became a tad unprofessional. I think I only made it to the second chapter and flipped through the book to get the gist of it. I would have liked to have been able to read more because I liked the message and the topics outlined seemed interesting.

About the Author
Peter Leach is seen as the founding father of family business thinking in the UK and pioneered research in the field in the 80's. He founded the Stoy Centre for Family Business, and was previously a partner at BDO LLP. He founded his own business, Peter Leach & Partners LLP, in 2008, which won the STEP Family Business Advisor of the Year 2013/14 before being acquired by Deloitte LLP in 2015. He is now a partner at Deloitte, leading the family Enterprise Consulting practice there.
