BAM-tastic

Says the parent to the librarian, "I need something for my child to improve their self-esteem" they'll say. Uh-huh. Fine. Self-esteem. That's the kind of topic that inspires the worst possible books for kids, you know. Cute forest animals who learn about sharing and small classroom dramas about "being yourself." If an author goes out there and says, "I'm going to write a book about self-esteem" they may find it near impossible to do well. Books of that sort have to come from someplace deep inside, or else they end up sounding like a novelization of a Barney the Dinosaur episode. So the next time a parent comes up to me and repeats that request, I'm going to be ready. My reference desk is situated a mere two and a half feet from the poetry shelves. I will look them in the eye, push my chair to the right, and pluck "Looking Like Me" by Walter Dean & Chris Myers out of the J811 Myers section. And if they start in with the "I don't know if I want poetry" nonsense, I shall explain that this is the best of the best. A combination of text and image so far and above the usual schlock that they simply have no choice. They must take it. And I will say this with the confidence that is born of knowing that you are 100% right.

"I looked in the mirror and what did I see? / A real handsome dude looking just like me." Two handsome dudes, father and son, come together to write a book of poetry about a kid who has all kinds of identities. He's a son and a brother. A poet and a runner. "I'm a city child. / I love the dizzy heights, / the concrete, the steel, / the bright neon lights." He's a dancer and a dreamer. This kid is all sorts of things. Set against Christopher Myers' eye-popping paper and photographic collages, we see how many people one person can be.

I don't actually know the complete story behind "Looking Like Me". As near as I can figure, though, it was something like this: Under normal circumstances picture book poetry titles are written first, illustrated second. That's how Myers, father and son, did "Harlem" and "Blues Journey" and such. "Looking Like Me" was completely different. First, Chris Myers made the art for one project and Walter Dean Myers wrote the poem for another. Then some genius somewhere thought to put the two together and by gum, it worked! That's no mean feat. To find a way to make a picture of a three-headed dude wearing white earmuffs make sense in the context of a story that was written for an entirely different purpose takes equal amounts of skill and luck.

It's probably too late to claim that this is the first instance of fist bumping in a children's book. I'm gonna go out on a limb, though, and claim that it IS the first instance of fist-bumping in a children's work of poetry put out by a major publisher. That's hardly the biggest innovation the book's text supports, though. Walter Dean Myers is the kind of guy who basically exudes depth and meaning every time he breathes. Which is great, of course, but it's nice to see him doing something a little lighter here. The book feels happy. Bouncy even. The first line sets the tone, and everything after that is just jocular. "Grandma's rings and bangles gave such a noisy BAM! / They were really celebrating the kind of guy I am."

Now the art is an interesting combination of techniques. Flip to the publication page and not a word is breathed about Chris and his style. Here are a couple of things we do know. The cover is a mix of cut paper and an enlarged microscopic image. Recently Chris has been playing around with microscopes. He's blown up slides of things like tree bark, enlarged them, and the vibrant colors. Inside the book are photographs, physical objects, and cut paper silhouettes of varying colors that over and underlap one another. Faces exist with cut out eyes. Mouths put out long house-covered tongues or open to reveal the necks of other mouths with other necks. It could be nightmarish if placed with the right text, but here it's a gentle surreality. Walter takes away the dark elements, so that the book has a dreamlike rather than nightmarish quality to it.

And I like the font. Sorry. That's a relatively dull way to end a review of a book of this sort, but it's true. I like it. That and the words, colors, energy, tone, and message, of course. Little things like that. On the surface it's a book about loving who you are, but dig a little deeper and you'll find a visual stimulant and unapologetic shout of joy. This is a book that enjoys being a book. Read it with a smile on your face. You can bet plenty of kids will.

Everyone is a me, myself and I and someone very unique and special. Jeremy is a city boy living in Harlem who has lots of things to put on his "I am list." He was handsome, he was a brother, a son, a writer, a student, he was proud, a "city child," an artist, a dancer, a "talker with many tales to tell," a secret keeper, and a boy with many words to share. A special teacher, Miss Kay, saw him writing in his book and asked it he was a writer. It was an affirmation of his talent.

"Miss Kay put out her fist.
I gave it a
BAM!

Say Jeremy,
Say brother,
Say son,
Say writer,
That's who I am."

Jeremy's "I am list" was long because, like all people, he was made up of more than just that handsome dude he saw in the mirror. He could run, he could dream, and he could BAM! Can you make a list like Jeremy, an "I am Jam?"

This book was so rhythmical that it will set your toes to tapping within a few stanzas. I enjoyed the way Jeremy exuded self-confidence and just knew he was made up of many, many special things. About the only thing I found lacking from this book was an online song to sing it to. The artwork was very vibrant and unusual. It appeared to be a computer generated collage mixed with some very interesting photographs like an inverted Heinz catsup bottle and a golden Buddha. If you want a book to pump up the jam, this is one that will make you want to get up and dance!

Great read aloud!

Bought this book for back to school reading aloud - I love it, and the students do as well (ten year olds). We use it as a mentor text to write bio-poems and create a collage about who we are. Will return to it later in the year when we study more about Walter Dean Myers.

A fun, exciting and humorous read!

Haggard has a wonderful way of keeping you turning the pages. This is a adventure book, a romance, a mystery, a buddy trip,a fantasy, and a moral tale. I received it in the mail, opened the package, sat down and read it, couldn't put it down, and finished it. What a fun afternoon! I highly recommend this book. It is wildly different and fast paced.

A LESSER BUT STILL MIGHTY FUN HAGGARD ADVENTURE

H. Rider Haggard's 33rd work of fiction out of an eventual 58, "The Yellow God" was first published in the U.S. in November 1908, and in Britain several months later. In this one, Haggard deals with one of his favorite subjects--African adventure--but puts a fresh spin on things. Thus, instead of Natal, Zululand, the Transvaal and Egypt, where the bulk of his African tales take place, "The Yellow God" transpires, for the most part, in what I gather is now northern Nigeria. And instead of big-game hunter Allan Quatermain (the protagonist of no less than 14 Haggard novels), here we are given Alan Vernon, an ex-Army colonel who, with his steadfast servant Jeekie, goes on a quest to find the legendary gold hordes of the undiscovered Asiki people. And, after braving a harrowing trek during which they encounter poison-arrow-shooting dwarves, good-hearted cannibals, fierce beasts, raging rivers, swamps and a monster storm, the lost people of Asikiland are indeed discovered, and Haggard treats us to yet another mysterious civilization, as well as its imposing ruler. In this case, it is the beautiful but wicked woman named the Asika, who I suppose some readers would deem a poor man's Ayesha of "She" fame, but who is quite an interesting character in her own right. As did Ayesha herself, the Asika takes a hot-blooded fancy to her white visitor, who she sees as a returned soul mate, and decides to keep him and Jeekie around...in perpetuity.

Anyway, "The Yellow God," while certainly not in the same league as "She" (but then again, how many books are?), is still quite an entertaining yarn. It is lesser Haggard, sure, but I still prefer even the lesser works of the man who has been called "the greatest adventure fantasist of all time" over most others. The book's main fault, I feel, is that it is not adequately fleshed out, not as detailed, as some of the author's best works. Indeed, the description of Bonsa Town, the main village of the Asiki, is somewhat difficult to envision, and the sketchy information that Haggard gives us (an island, a waterfall) only succeeds in making the place dreamlike; almost surreal. As for the yellow god of the title, the so-called Little Bonsa, it is difficult to tell whether the darn thing is a statue or a mask, and just how the wearer of the thing is able to see out of its bejeweled eyes. Still, I suppose that these are minor matters, and that most readers will be content to settle into a fast-moving adventure that is both exciting and amusing. And most of that amusement, for me anyway, comes from the Asiki native Jeekie, who is easily the most well-drawn and appealing character in the entire book. Unlike Quatermain's diminutive Hottentot sidekick Hans, Jeekie is very tall and very strong; similar to Hans, he is also very funny. His manner of expression, a unique blend of the King's English and pidgin slang, is a real riot, and he never seems to be at a loss for an amusing quip. For example, check out what he yells at one of the attacking dwarves that he has just blown away: "Ah! my boy...how you like bullet in tail? You not know Paradox guaranteed flat 'jectory 250 yard. You remember that next time, sonny." Longtime fans of Haggard will not be surprised to learn that, like Hans, Jeekie proves himself the toughest, smartest and most resourceful character around. He elevates the book above the commonplace, much more so, at least, than the comparatively colorless Vernon. Anyway, I suppose that the bottom line is that "The Yellow God" is not up to the same extraordinarily high standards of many of the author's other tales, but still provides fine entertainment value. It's an easy read, a real page-turner, and I can honestly recommend it to one and all. And oh...just wait till you see what Vernon does to the Big Bonsa. Very strange, in the extreme!

Great guide to essential oils

Ive always been interested oils and aromatherapy and the use of them. This is a good beginners guide which explains what oils are, what uses they have and also methods of making them. It also has a list of recipes you can use oils in. It s easy to follow, informative with greats tips and advice. Well worth reading

Interesting

The Good
I wasn't hooked on the idea of this book at first because it is, ultimately, about cheating, but the writing style in which it's told and the look inside the reasons behind the occurrence of the affair really blow this story out of the water. I felt every pain, saw every bit of logic behind her decision, and understood it.

The Bad
Affairs end tragically. The spouse finds out, and whether the marriage is a good one or a bad one, affairs destroy families - a fact that's never forgotten in this book because the narrator, Meredith, won't let us. It's a constant reminder throughout the book: to herself, to the reader, and even to her lover. Over and over and over again, we're reminded of how bad affairs can get, and despite all the bad things, the affair continues until we're bludgeoned to death with the idea.

The Review
While the book sort-of ends on a cliff-hanger, it can stand on its own too, which I like. I really do like stand-alone novels (or books I can satisfyingly pretend are stand-alone novels *ahem* Fifty Shades of Grey). That said, I enjoyed the writing style of this novel as well as the characters and their motivations/ideals, and I will probably read the sequel/conclusion of this novel, The Lion's Den.

Fantastic duet, loved it

The Devil’s Playground &
The Lion’s Den by Eliza Freed
4 stars & 4.5 stars!!!!

“This was nothing but a dangerous distraction. It was the devil’s playground.”

These two books are a duet and ones that I read one after the other, only taking the mandatory toilet breaks and of course feeding the husband and kids, they were that addictive. Yes, this book does contain cheating which I know is a major turn off for some readers, however, the way that Meredith’s story is delivered is sympathetic, understandable and totally consuming.

“I’ve stopped time and have you all to myself, and in the moments I’m quiet, I’m trying to figure out how to never start it again.”

The Devils Playground is totally told in Meredith’s point of view and brings to the forefront just how lost she feels. Having been forced to move to the suburbs by her husband, to a house that she didn’t want and an area where she knew no-one she had never felt so isolated. Once a high flying attorney Meredith’s life is now monotonous, predictable and totally orbits around the lives of her two hilarious children. Meredith’s kids are the light of her majorly dim life and if it wasn’t for them she would have given up a long time ago.

Meredith’s husband, Brad, still lives the single life. He “works” all the hour’s god sends and is never ever around. Leaving the house in the early hours and rarely home before 10pm. Always attending happy hours, company dinners and a plethora of parties, leaving Meredith and the kids behind. “Work” invades his weekends and he really is a stranger in the night. I had my suspicions about Brad from the very beginning, he tried to come across as perfect and being the bread winner for the family, but when someone is so perfect, more often than not they are not, they are always hiding something.

“He’d wanted me so much back then, and I’d wanted him to have me. I just hadn’t realised how much he would take.”

Vince, I ADORED this man, he was the Colonel, the head of police in this little community and everyone loved him. He was the one stable person of authority that everyone relied upon and he was selfless. He helped everybody, was a volunteer for all school and community functions and was a real pillar of the community. He had a wife and family too, but in the past two years he had really been at the point of his life where he was re-evaluating everything.

“He was magnificent. A souvenir I hadn’t paid for, the vacation I didn’t earn. He was stolen goods, and I never wanted to return them, but I also knew I wouldn’t do the time to keep him. The cost was too high.”

When Meredith and Vincent’s paths cross the attraction is undeniable, the chemistry is palpable and the kindle literally combusted. But Meredith is a woman of morals and was adamant that she would never have an affair. Eliza Freed really captured that push and pull of attraction, that back of forth of conscience over emotion and the true fight to do what is right and to try and make the right choices.

“This won’t work if you’re in love with me. A mistake will be made.”
“It isn’t a mistake.”
“It’s worse. We’re a tragedy.”

As much as I should have been rooting for these two to steer clear of each other there was no denying their attraction and it really was a foregone conclusion. This was not just an attraction of lust but they had an undeniable friendship, a soul mate connection that grew and grew the more and more they spent in each other’s company. It is this intense connection that managed to shift my moral compass firmly in their corner. I would never condone an affair, however, these two were perfect for each other and with such a crappy husband who showed her no affection, no attention and literally used her, it was no surprise that she strayed. However, it was not an easy choice and one that she battled with for a long time.

“Brad didn’t realize I wasn’t some twenty-five-year-old he was effing. I was his wife, and I was already gone.”

The Lion’s Den was fast paced and action packed and was told in three POV’s, Brad, Vince and Meredith. Eliza Freed really delivers an epic conclusion to this duet that will have you on the edge of your seat while delivering curve ball after curve ball.

“Just follow your heart. It’ll lead you home.”
“What if my heart lost its memory too?”

Everyone’s story is told in this book and finally you get to see the behind scenes, warts and all which only added another dimension to the twisted that Eliza Freed has penned.

“When a married man had an affair with a young girl, he was the only one having an affair. She was dating.”

This duet was totally addictive, unputdownable and for me, an easy, quick read. Meredith’s kids really add the fun factor to this story and created many a laugh out loud moment as I sympathised with the endless, monotonous unanswerable questions that kids manage to pluck out of thin air and of course you cannot beat their unique fashion sense. Meredith was the epitome of a mama bear, her kids always came first and foremost and she would lay her life down for them, her life was her kids until someone showed her that she deserved a life too.

“I was unhappy-horribly unhappy-and lonely. I let you fix what you never broke. I let you fill a spot you never vacated. I slipped into the darkness, because I’d follow you to hell if you asked me to.”

This was a beautiful story that will have you heart swooning, while the suspense will have your stomach tied up in knots. It’s emotional in places but perfectly balanced with wit and humour that will also have you laughing out loud. For a cheating story, it worked, it wasn’t illicit, it was two people that found love when they weren’t looking. I cannot wait to read more from this author, my only complaint…I WANT AN EPILOGUE!!!!!

Another amazing read from Eliza Freed!

I’ve come to the conclusion that if Eliza Freed writes it, I will read it. Freed demonstrated her writing chops with the N/A Lost Souls series, but the Faraway series takes on the very adult, very difficult theme of adultery. While this trope might be a non-starter for some, I highly suggest you check this one out. There are themes that may be familiar to anyone in a long-term committed relationship, especially when it comes to the realization that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.

"It's like our kids steal our beauty. They steal our lives, and all we can do is helplessly give them every ounce of it because we love them more than ourselves."

Meredith gave up her professional life as a US District Attorney in order to pursue the suburban American dream; professional husband, two kids, the McMansion, the rolling green hills behind the white picket fence. But little did she realize is that she would lose her own identity in the process; the drive and ambition that was at the soul of her very being. So when she strikes up an easy friendship with the town sheriff Vincent, she starts to flourish and appreciate small town life. The friendship soon becomes physical, but Meredith isn’t the type of woman to have an affair, is she?

Told in the first person from Meredith’s point of view, it is very easy to get lost in all of the feelings she is experiencing. Balancing a new romance, a failing marriage, a complicated friendship all while acting as a constant and active present in her children’s lives proves to wear on her quickly, and we see all of those factors affect the decisions she makes. It’s easy to get caught up in Meredith’s rationalization, the relationship with Vincent acting almost like a drug in her need for it.

The book ends on a cliffhanger and I was dying to get my hands on the next book, it was just that good. It’s really hard to decide which to root for: the new, exciting, whirlwind romance or the decade long investment. Ultimately it’s not a situation Meredith can sustain, but her decisions might have consequences that reach much further than just her own personal happiness.
